Guardian Awards for our Developmental work in South Africa. Last year
we were awarded the BEST NPO award and this year we topped that by

The United Jewish Association paid a historic fact finding visit to South Africa to investigate Jewish outreach organisations activities within the country. MaAfrika Tikkun was proud to host this delegation of Business people and Philanthropists in January and took them on a project visit to one of their community activity sites – The Wings of Life Community Project in Diepsloot.

Valentines Day, the 14th of February 2006, saw two representatives from MaAfrika Tikkun, Galit Cohen and Charlotte Steenekamp, meet with the McDonalds Toy Soldiers Team and Ronald McDonald at City Deep. Together with the Metro Police and the McDonalds Golden Arch double-decker bus, and an exceptionally skilled driver, approximately 2000 toys were personally distributed to the Johannesburg General Hospital, Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto and to orphans and vulnerable children at the Orange Farm Skills and Development Centre. Another 2000 or so toys were left behind for the respective hospitals and at Orange Farm to service the increasing needs of the community.

AT FIRST glance, Johannes’s bedroom looks like that of any 16-year-old boy: a small television, a poster of the rap singer Eminem and a pile of clothes, partially hidden under an armchair. But the television is broken, the poster conceals a hole and the covers on the armchair are tattered and torn. Johannes shares this single-room shack with his six-year-old niece Mabusha, and eleven-year-old brother Teboho. There is no power, and food is cooked on a fire outside.

From workshop to winners—MaAfrika Tikkun’s ‘Face Value: Sharing the Vision’ photo competitors talk about their work
One overcast day in October, Thuwaybah Omar, a lovely 17 year old
girl from Delft, returned home from a photographic workshop she
attended with a disposable camera in hand eager to get snapping. Her
goal? Express her appreciation for the role MaAfrika Tikkun plays in
her life …and to win the Face Value: Sharing the Vision photo
competition.

On the 22nd of October 2006, Tikkun Youth and MaAfrika Tikkun hosted a Fun Day for street kids in Hillbrow. Tikkun Youth, high school and university students from the Jewish community, helped with the planning and running of the day.

Three NGOs have come together and established a community initiative called Wings of Life in Diepsloot, with the support of the Methodist Church of South Africa.
