Vulnerable Children

South Africa has an enormous problem: some 2,5 million children have become heads of their households because HIV/AIDs and other diseases such as TB have incapacitated or killed their parents. MaAfrika Tikkun's aim is to support and care for these vulnerable children (OVCs) without institutionalizing them.

We support vulnerable children in three areas:

1. Homebased care: For children living in an unstable and unsupportive environment where their parents are incapable of looking after them due to sickness. We stablise their environment as much as possible, and care for them and their sick parents in their shacks.

2.Early childhood development: Our programmes are designed by leading experts in the field of babies and children aged 0-6 years. The course content is accredited and focuses on the basic life skills these children will need to master for primary school.

3.Youth development: For the 7-19 year olds, we offer after school centres where various skills development programmes, homework support, lifeskills, multimedia and library facilties, sport and dance class are offered to keep these youths busy and productive, instead of tempting them to a life of crime. Our vochellies or role models mentor their younger counterparts to steer them in a positive direction.
