Tikkun Youth Hillbrow Fun Day |
On the 22nd of October 2006, Tikkun Youth and MaAfrika Tikkun hosted a Fun Day for street kids in Hillbrow. Tikkun Youth, high school and university students from the Jewish community, helped with the planning and running of the day.
Thomas Mayisa, who does amazing work with street kids in Hillbrow worked with MaAfrika Tikkun to identify the 60 kids that would be involved. The event took place at the University of Johannesburg soccer fields. The day began at 10:00 as the kids arrived via taxi from Hillbrow. Vochelies, youth facilitators from the Leseding Centre - a MaAfrika Tikkun after-school program in Orange Farm, began the day leading group games and activities. Following a snack, groups of kids from Tikkun Youth and Hillbrow formed teams, invented names and team songs and painted bandannas with their team colors. A round-robin style soccer games and relays followed with lots of laughter and enthusiasm. Hillbrow Nando's donated lunch for all the participants which was a big hit. Everyone received a T-shirt and the Hillbrow kids were each given a bag with sweets, a face clothe and soap.
It was a great day with the sun shining and kids getting a chance to be kids. Everyone involved had fun and talk of our next event has already started.
