Nomsa Mdlozini Twala is an aspiring young lady studying toward a Baccalaureate of Commerce in Tourism from the Midrand University in Gauteng. Mr. David Susman, the former Chairperson of Woolworths is her sponsor.
Having completed one and a half years of her studies, Nomsa found herself in financial difficulty and couldn’t afford to pay the University fees. One day, while helping with the food distribution to the destitute elderly at MaAfrika Tikkun’s Phutadi Chaba Community Center in Alexandria, she met with Herby Rosenberg, the Executive Deputy Chairman of MaAfrika Tikkun. This significant meeting transformed Nomsa’s life for ever.
Through Mr. Rosenberg’s determination, Nomisa has received a scholarship toward her University fees so that she may continue her studies and complete her degree in Tourism. The Donor is Mr. David Susman, the former Chairperson of Woolworths. His message to the world is: “MaAfrika Tikkun provides the Jewish Community of South Africa with an opportunity to reach across the historic barriers that have divided South Africa for so long……I am proud to be part, however miniscule, of Tikkun’s noble aims and objective.”
Additionally, Nonzame Mkwane and Andrea Victoria are two shining examples of transformation through education. Both these ladies are recipients of bursaries from the Susman Fund and are successful in their chosen careers.
Several years ago a team comprising of David Susman, Jack Tworetzky and Herby Rosenberg met to discuss disbursement of donations from which emerged the Jewish Community Scholarship Fund established by David Susman. The three gentlemen are, indeed, the Trustees of this Fund while Herby Rosenberg oversees the Funds disbursement through the management of MaAfrika Tikkun offices. This fund is worth a substantial amount of money and while it was previously reserved to provide scholarships to orphans and vulnerable children the new charter has extended it’s mandate to make funds available to a wider group of beneficiaries including members of the MaAfrika Tikkun and ORT teams to enable service providers to better serve the disadvantaged communities they work in.
