MaAfrika Tikkun – Champions of Caring Leadership Programme 2007- 08 |
Champions of Caring is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to honoring, educating, and empowering youth in the greater Philadelphia region to become active in improving their communities The MaAfrika Tikkun - Champions of Caring program will implement the Ambassadors of Caring leadership program for thirty students in Cape Town, South Africa throughout the 2007-2008 school year.
The goal of the Champions of Caring Ambassadors’ Program is to empower youth leaders to become advocates for service and social justice, and to support the mission of the Champions of Caring organization. By implementing the program MaAfrika Tikkun hopes to encourage intercultural communication and expand the network of students throughout the world who are committed to service and social justice in their own communities and globally.
Barbara Miller, MaAfrika Tikkun’s Executive Director commented that “Champions of Caring” is the latest programme in our Informal Education programme, which includes GoLD Peer Education and Student for Student programmes, the (soon to be) Annual Big Talk event and our Dance and Drama group. The quote above captures elements which are found in the Champions of Caring programme: that of discovering your dreams, value of and purpose in life. As with our other programmes in this portfolio, the programme allows, enables and empowers our ever-growing number of MaAfrika Tikkun studens: they find tools to assist them in accessing their dreams, their aspirations and their hopes.
The benefits for the students are to:
• Believe that they can make a difference,
• Feel connected to one another,
• Feel a deeper connection and connectedness to their various communities,
• Get involved and committed to their school community,
• Consider and learn about, the feelings and opinions of others,
• Have a responsibility to help people and care about issues in their communities,
• Work to promote social justice,
• Become conscientious, good citizens.
Champions of Caring provides another signpost along their and our wondrous voyage of discovery – we are excited to be working with this valuable programme.
